Teaching music to every child

Introduction to Ensembles

If your student has only ever taken private lessons (as many of our students have), then he or she has been intimately involved in only one musical activity.  While private lessons are the best thing you can do for your young musician, they are just one part of the musical experience.  To be a well-rounded musician, students should also be involved in both small and large ensembles.  Each situation represents unique skills.  Private students must learn to play soloistically, and work heavily on technique.  Small ensembles present the opportunity to learn to coordinate with just a few other musicians while playing a unique part (i.e. learning to listen and be strong in one's own part).  Large ensembles teach students to match their playing to those around them, to hear their part within the whole, and to follow a conductor.  Each is important!

Since Kate's Music School is dedicated to teaching well-rounded musicians, and not relying on only one aspect of musicianship (personal technique), we are offering small and large ensemble experiences beginning this fall.  We want to provide our students with the opportunities they need to become musicians who are very versatile, able to play a number of styles and settings confidently.  We also want our students to have FUN by meeting up with other musicians!

Please see below for details on each program, the large and small ensembles.  The large ensemble is FREE this fall during the initial launch!

Small Ensemble Program

In addition to our large ensemble program, we are developing a small ensemble program.  Students need the opportunity to play in small groups as well as large groups, as this develops different skills.  Students who are in small ensembles are not conducted; they must learn to listen to one another and follow a leader within the group.  They will also be playing only one on a part, so it is more difficult to match parts together.  However, playing in small ensembles can be very rewarding!

Small ensembles will be created as students request them.  Coaching rates for ensembles will be listed below.  To join an ensemble, a student simply needs to fill out an application form either in the studio or on the website, indicating his or her interest in the program.  Students will list what instrument they play, approximately what level they are at (ask for assistance with this if needed), what type of ensemble they’d like to be in (duet, trio, quartet; same-instrument or different instruments), and if they have a friend(s) in mind to participate with them.  Students will be matched based on their desired ensemble and playing level.

Some suggested ensembles: two violin duet, clarinet trio, string quartet, wind quintet or quartet, two clarinet and saxophone trio, etc.  Only your imagination limits what you choose!  If you choose a “non standard” group, we will arrange music for you.

Rates:

$80/month per student for one hour-long coaching session a week (NON-STUDENTS)

$70/month per student for one hour-long coaching session a week (students)

$100/TWO months per student for weekly hour-long coaching sessions if paid in advance (students)
